My Review

Gwyneth Paltrow is definitely in her element as matchmaker Emma Woodhouse in director-screenwriter Douglas McGrath’s “Emma.” McGrath is faithful to the 1815 novel by Jane Austin in his debut at the helm of a motion picture for theatrical release. Good production values abound, proof being the one Oscar win for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score for Rachel Portman. (One other nomination for Best Costume Design.) Cinematographer Ian Wilson did an outstanding job with the beautiful photography in the English countryside.

The supporting cast behind Paltrow includes Jeremy Northam, Alan Cumming, Toni Collette, Ewan McGregor, Juliet Stevenson, Greta Scacchi, Polly Walker, Phyllida Law, Sophie Thompson, James Cosmo, Denys Hawthorne, Karen Westwood, Kathleen Bryson, Brian Capron, Angela Down, John Franklyn-Robins, and Ruth Jones as the Bates family maid. “Emma” was successful at the box office for Haft Entertainment, Matchmaker Films, Miramax Films, Buena Vista International, and The Walt Disney Company.
