My Review

Helen Mirren stars as a faded 1960’s rock singer who gets involved in the world of illegal art trade when her friend’s father is murdered in a bungled robbery. “Painted Lady” is an exciting and fast-moving miniseries directed by Julian Jarrold from an excellent teleplay by Allan Cubitt. This co-production of Granada Television and WGBH Boston aired on television on ITV in the UK and on PBS in the US in December, 1997.

The supporting cast with Helen Mirren includes Franco Nero, Ian Glen, Michael Maloney, Leslie Manville, Iain Cuthbertson, John Kavanaugh, Barry Barnes, and Michael Liebmann. The very watchable “Painted Lady” keeps the audience trying to guess who done it throughout the three-and-a-half hour film. The plot of this murder mystery has more turns and zigzags than a maze in an English garden.
