My Review

A futuristic crime drama and a look at the ethics of human genetic engineering both describe the excellent science fiction movie “Gattaca.” Andrew Niccol wrote and directed this film with little waste in the storyline and plot; it was a fast-moving 106 minutes.

The cast includes Uma Thurman, Ethan Hawke, Jude Law, Loren Dean, Blair Underwood, Alan Arkin, Maya Rudolph, Gore Vidal, Ernest Borgnine, Tony Shalhoub, Dean Norris, Ken Marino, and Jayne Brook. Cinematographer Slawomir Idziak did a good job filming in places that have futuristic buildings, like the CLA Building at Cal Poly Pomona and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Marin County Civic Center.

“Gattaca” was not successful at the box office for producer Danny DeVito, Jersey Films, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. It has one Oscar nomination for Best Art Direction.
