“Beverly Hills Ninja” is most definitely a Chris Farley vehicle, and a very hilarious one at that. The screenplay by Mark Feldberg and Mitchell Klebanoff fits Farley’s unique slap-stick and physical comedy talents to a tee. Focused direction by Dennis Dugan (“Happy Gilmore” 1996) helps keep the storyline and film on track.
Farley’s character, named Haru, was a white child raised by Ninjas in Japan, after he washed ashore in a box. This was a fulfilment of the legend of the Great White Ninja. However, the heavy-set Haru did not live up to his billing. He is eventually hired by an American woman (Nicolette Sheridan) for a job. “I’ve heard ninjas can get into places without being seen….What I need requires great stealth,” says Sheridan. “You are in luck,” replies Farley. “My highest grades are in stealth.”
The supporting cast behind Chris Farley and Nicolette Sheridan includes Nathaniel Parker, Soon-Tek Oh, Chris Rock, Robin Shou, Francois Chou, Jason Tobin, Billy Connolly (uncredited cameo), and John P. Farley and Kevin Farley (Chris’ two brothers) as policemen.
“Beverly Hills Ninja” was successful at the box office for TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing. This was the last major film role for Chris Farley before his death in December, 1997.
