My Review

Another “Dallas” reunion TV movie came out in 1998 called “Dallas: War of the Ewings.” This Warner Bros. production tells the story of J. R. Ewing’s attempt to regain control of Ewing Oil Co., controlled by brother Bobby Ewing and ex-wife Sue Ellen Shepard Ewing. This is a sequel of “J. R. Returns” (1996); both made-for-television films were after-stories of the “Dallas” series than ran on CBS from 1978-1991.

Larry Hagman once again plays his lifetime signature role of John Ross Ewing Jr. Though aging and somewhat sluggish, Hagman still has much of his old magic. Linda Grey and Patrick Duffy also return as Sue Ellen and Bobby, respectively. The cast also includes Steve Kanaly as Ray Krebs, George Kennedy as Carter McKay, Tracy Scoggins as Anita Smithfield, Michelle Johnson as Jennifer Jantzen, Philip Anglim as Peter Ellington, Brad Leland as the deputy sheriff, and Jerry Jones as himself.

With a good teleplay by Arthur Bernard Lewis and Julie Sayres and expert direction by Michael Preece, “Dallas: War of the Ewings” is a fun and watchable revisit to David Jacobs’ TV creation “Dallas” that we have enjoyed for so many years. It was aired on CBS on April 24, 1998. A new “Dallas” television program would air for three seasons on TNT (2012-2014); it would ignore the events of the two reunion films of 1996 and 1998. There would be a reunion of the cast in 2004 called “Dallas Reunion: Return to Southfork,” with all of the originals in attendance.
