My Review

“Little Women” is the story of four sisters from Concord, Massachusetts, and the ups and downs of life when their father is away with the military service in the Civil War. Producer-director Mervyn LeRoy (“Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo” 1945) was at the top of his game in charge of a large cast, adapting the show from the popular 1868 novel of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, and the 1933 film featuring Katherine Hepburn.

The cast was headed by June Allison, Margaret O’Brien, Elizabeth Taylor, and Janet Leigh. All four would go on to long careers in the picture business. At the time, they were part of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer stable of famous performers, who claimed they had “more stars than there are in heaven.” They may have been correct!

The supporting cast included Mary Astor, Peter Lawford, Lucille Watson, Elizabeth Patterson, Harry Davenport, Leon Ames, Ellen Corby, Richard Stapley, Connie Gilchrist, Harlan Briggs, Frank Darian, Lisa Golm, Olin Howard, Isabel Randolph, and Will Wright. Lots of familiar faces here! Also starring was Rossano Brazzi, an Italian actor making his American film debut. He would continue in films until 1996. Another co-star was Englishman C. Aubrey Smith in his final movie role in a motion picture career that began in 1915.

Filmed in fabulous Technicolor, “Little Women” was successful at the box office for Mervyn LeRoy and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It won one Oscar for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration in Color, and was nominated for one other for Best Cinematography in Color.
