The latest Godzilla movie to come out of Japan is nothing less than a stunning achievement. “Godzilla Minus One” from producer-director-screenwriter Takashi Yamazaki is an exciting thrill ride with outstanding special effects, a human storyline, and outstanding production values. It goes back to 1945 to tell the story of the emergence of the monster who attacks and demolishes Japanese cities, and the attempt to stop it.
The cast does an excellent job with their performances, all in the Japanese language. (English subtitles are provided for American and other English-speaking lands.) Actors include Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, Kuranosuke Sasaki, and Sae Nagatani as Akiko, the little girl orphaned in World War II. The very watchable “Godzilla Minus One” has been successful at the global box office for Toho Studios and Robot Communications. It is the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise.
