My Review

The Best Picture of 2000 is…..”Gladiator.” It tells the story of a Roman general who refuses to pledge allegiance to the new emperor and is stripped of his title and lands and sold into slavery. He eventually returns as a gladiator seeking revenge. Director Ridley Scott (“Alien” 1979) did an amazing job with this epic film that has excellent production values, outstanding performances, and a marvelous screenplay by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson.

Russell Crowe was definitely in his element as the principled General Maximus. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor. The cast also includes Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Derek Jacobi, Djimon Hounsou, Richard Harris, David Hemmings, Ralf Moller, David Schofield, John Schrapnel, Tomas Arana, Spencer Treat Clark, Sven-Ole Thorson, Omid Djalili, Giannina Facio, Giorgio Cantarini, and Oliver Reed as veteran gladiator Antonius Proximo. This was Reed’s final film in a career that began in 1955.

“Gladiator” won five Oscars, out of twelve nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard composed the excellent musical score. The 155 minute film was a big hit in theatrical release for Red Wagon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, DreamWorks Pictures, and Universal Pictures. Ridley Scott announced that he is working on a sequel to be released around Thanksgiving 2024, sans Russell Crowe.
