My Review

“Blow” is a crime drama about the life story of drug smuggler George Jung. Producer-director Ted Demme put together a watchable film about the rise and fall of Jung, vividly portraying the dire consequences of this type of illegal activity. The screenplay was written by David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes (son of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands), adapted from the 1993 book by Bruce Porter.

Johnny Depp plays the lead role with a reckless abandon that one could imagine of someone like Jung. Depp’s performance made this run-of-the-mill crime drama, that we have seen before, stand out a bit. The supporting cast includes Ray Liotta, Rachel Griffiths, Penelope Cruz, Paul Reubens, Franka Petente, Jordi Molla, Cliff Curtis, Kevin Gage, Tony Amendola, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Bobcat Goldthwait, Michael Tucci, Monet Mazur, Lola Glaudini, Jennifer Gimenez, Jamie King, Ethan Suplee, Miguel Sandoval, Max Perlich, and Emma Roberts, daughter of Eric Roberts and niece of Julia Roberts.

“Blow” barely broke even at the box office for New Line Cinema. And we don’t want to forget that Penelope Cruz was nominated for a Golden Raspberry Award (the Razzies) for Worst Actress!
