My Review

“America’s Sweethearts” is a romantic comedy from director Joe Roth (“Coupe de Ville” 1990), featuring an all star cast that would give potential viewers hope that this is a high quality film. However, Roth and screenwriters Billy Crystal and Peter Tolan have put together an uneven comedy where the laughs come only in spurts.

The stars include Julia Roberts, Billy Crystal, Catherine Zeta-Jones, John Cusack, Stanley Tucci, Christopher Walken, Seth Green, Hank Azaria, Alan Arkin, Rainn Wilson, Eric Balfour, Steve Pink, Maria Canals, Keri Lynn Pratt, and Marty Belafsky. Larry King and Byron Allen appear as themselves in cameos. Emma Roberts, niece of Julia Roberts and daughter of Eric Roberts, makes an uncredited cameo as a young girl in a purple T-shirt. Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster Charley Steiner also makes a cameo appearance as a newscaster on television.

In conclusion, we deem “America’s Sweethearts” to be a watchable and a mildly entertaining motion picture due to the overwhelming and winsome personalities of stars Roberts, Crystal, Zeta-Jones, Cusack, et al. It was successful in theatrical release for producer Billy Crystal, Face Productions, Revolution Studios, Roth-Arnold Productions, Shoelace Productions, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
