My Review

Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Lauren Bacall team up to make an irresistible big screen combo in “How to Marry a Millionaire.” This glossy romantic comedy was expertly directed by Jean Negulesco (“Johnny Belinda” 1948) and produced and written by Nunnally Johnson (“The Grapes of Wrath” 1940).

To add further appeal, 20th Century Fox made this story of three models pursuing three wealthy men their first movie to be filmed in the new CinemaScope wide screen process, one of several attempts by the major studios in the 1950’s to keep people going to theaters instead of staying home and watching the suddenly wildly popular medium of television. It was a financial success for Fox, their second most popular motion picture of 1953 after “The Robe.” This lush production received one Oscar nomination: Best Costume Design.

The talented supporting cast of the very watchable “How to Marry a Millionaire” included William Powell, Rory Calhoun, Cameron Mitchell, Alex D’Arcy, Fred Clark, and David Wayne, who later went on to fame in television as The Mad Hatter in “Batman” (1966) and as Digger Barnes in “Dallas” (1978).
