Over two hundred collective years of movie-making has paid off for the four stars of the romantic comedy “Book Club: The Next Chapter.” Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candace Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen deliver corny jokes under a predicable plot in a professional manner under the guidance of director Bill Holderman, who also co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced with Erin Simms.
This sequel to 2018’s “Book Club” (also created by Holderman and Simms) moves to the picturesque scenery of Italy for more romantic adventures. (The outstanding cinematography by Andrew Dunn is another star of the show.) The supporting cast includes Craig T. Nelson, Giancarlo Giannini, Andy Garcia, Don Johnson, Vincent Riotta, and Hugh Quarshie.
The watchable “Book Club: The Next Chapter” was not very successful in theatrical release for Makeready, Fifth Season, Apartment Story, Focus Features, and Universal Pictures. They blamed the bad box office on the reluctance of older females to return to theaters after the COVID19 pandemic.
