My Review

“Triangle of Sadness” is a black comedy film about an affluent couple on a luxury cruise that hits a heavy storm and becomes stranded on a desert island, with the people struggling for survival. Swedish director-screenwriter Ruben Ostlund, in his English-language directorial debut, has constructed a film that has outstanding character development paired with what seems to be a light commentary on excessive materialism. The movie has good pacing and holds the viewer’s attention throughout the two-and-a-half hour viewing time.

The international cast includes Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean in the lead roles, and Dolly de Leon as the antagonist. These top three stars of the show delivered outstanding performances. The co-stars are Zlatco Buric, Iris Berben, Vicki Berlin, Henrik Dorsin, Jean-Christophe Folly, Amanda Walker, Sunnyi Melles, and Woody Harrelson as the ship’s captain. This was the final film of Charlbi Dean, who passed away in August, 2022, at the age of 32.

The satisfying and watchable “Triangle of Sadness” was a modest hit at the box office for a consortium of European movie production companies, including BBC Film, British Film Institute, Sveriges Television, Arte France Cinema, Eurimages: Council of Europe, The Danish Film Institute, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Canal+, Cine+, Lionsgate UK, et al.
