My Review

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” is a United Kingdom period biographical drama film about the lives of “Winnie-the-Pooh” author A. A. Milne and his wife and son, Christopher Robin. Director Simon Curtis (“My Week With Marilyn” 2011) put together a tasteful and refined movie that not only takes a look at the development of the Winnie the Pooh characters, but also depicts Milne’s dealing with post traumatic stress disorder after his World War I military service. The screenplay by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Simon Vaughn is captivating, giving high quality material for the actors to perform.

The entire cast came through with glowing performances, including Domhnall Gleeson as Milne, Margot Robbie as his wife Dorothy “Daphne” de Selincourt Milne, and Kelly Macdonald as Christopher Robin’s nanny. The young actors portraying Christopher Robin at various ages were outstanding: Dexter & Sonny Hyman as the 3-year-old, Will Tilson as the 9-year-old, and Alex Lawther as the 18-year-old. The supporting cast includes Vicky Pepperdine, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Stephen Campbell Moore, Richard McCabe, Simon Williams, Geraldine Somerville, and Nico Mirallegro.

“Goodbye Christopher Robin” was beautifully filmed in the English countryside by cinematographer Ben Smithard. It was a modest success at the box office for DJ Films, Gasworks Media, TSG Entertainment, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
