My Review

“Armageddon Time” tells the story of a young Jewish-American boy and his childhood experiences growing up in 1980’s New York City. This well-written and superbly directed coming-of-age drama was drawn from the personal experiences of director-screenwriter James Gray (“Ad Astra” 2019). The overall tone of the movie was calm and mature, dealing with topics like racism and antisemitism, with outstanding performances by the actors.

Young actor Banks Repeta does quite a job in the lead role of Paul Banks. He is very talented to be able to hold his own on the big screen with adult actors like Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong, who play his parents, and Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins as his grandfather. Co-stars include Jaylin Webb, Tovah Feldshuh, Richard Bekins, Domenick Lombardozzi, and Marcia Jean Kurtz. Appearing in small roles are John Diehl as Fred Trump and Jessica Chastain as Maryanne Trump.

The very watchable “Armageddon Time” was unfortunately not successful in theatrical release, bad news for co-producer-director James Gray, RT Features, Mad River Pictures, Keep Your Head Productions, Spacemaker Productions, Focus Features, and Universal Pictures.
