My Review

Director-screenwriter Charlie Day has put together a real dud in his first job at the helm of a feature motion picture in “Fool’s Paradise.” It is billed as a satirical comedy film that tells the story of a movie producer who replaces a difficult star of his film with a mentally challenged mute man he found on the street selling oranges. The problem is that the entire film has maybe a half-dozen laughs and very few comic situations. During most of the film, actors are racing around trying too hard to be funny and end up over-acting.

The stars include Charlie Day, Ken Jeong, Kate Beckinsale, Adrien Brody, Jason Sudeikis, Edie Falco, Jason Bateman, Common, John Malkovich, Jimmi Simpson, Alana Ubach, Dean Norris, and Ray Liotta as the producer. This was one of Liotta’s final film roles after passing away in May, 2022.

Charlie Day may have better projects in the future, but the poorly written and sloppily directed “Fool’s Paradise” is not one of them. It was a huge bomb at the box office for Armory Films, Wrigley Pictures, and Roadside Attractions.
