“Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune” is a worthy sequel to 2000’s “Frank Herbert’s Dune.” Both miniseries were broadcast on the SciFi Channel, among the highest rated shows ever on that cable television network. Director Greg Yaitanes and teleplay author John Harrison continue the high-quality production values of the first, including good writing, great acting, outstanding special effects, and wonderful cinematography.
Much of the cast from “Frank Herbert’s Dune” return for “Children,” including Alec Newman as Paul Atreides, Julie Cox as Princess Irulan, Ian McNeice (Burt Large of “Doc Martin”) as Baron Harkonnen, Barbara Kodetova as Chani, P. H. Moriarty as Gurney Halleck, and Zuzana Geislerova as the Rev. Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam. Other co-stars are Daniela Amavias, James McAvoy, Jessica Brooks, Alice Krige (The Borg Queen of numerous “Star Trek” shows and movies), and Oscar winner Susan Sarandon as Princess Wensicia.
Fans of Frank Herbert’s novels will surely enjoy both “Frank Herbert’s Dune” and “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune,” a veritable feast of the Dune universe. This second “Dune” miniseries is based on Herbert’s second and third novels in the series, “Dune Messiah” and “Children of Dune,” and is four hours and twenty-six minutes viewing time. “Frank Herbert’s Children of Dune” was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special.
