My Review

“Mothering Sunday” is a romantic drama about a maid who spends each Sunday with a wealthy man in an affair that goes on for several years. The excellent screenplay and superior production values provide an accurate depiction of life in Britain in the World War I era.

The cast is headed by Odessa Young and Josh O’Connor as the young couple in question, with talented support from Olivia Colman, Colin Firth, Sope Dirisu, Patsy Ferran, Emma D’Arcy, Simon Shepherd, and Glenda Jackson in her first film appearance since 1990. (One activity during the 31 year movie hiatus was a stint as an MP, Member of Parliament.)

Director Eva Husson and screenwriter Alice Birch did an outstanding job of adapting the watchable “Mothering Sunday” from the 2016 novel of the same name by Graham Swift.
