My Review

The Best Picture of 2003 is…..”The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” This third and final installment of “The Lord of the Rings” series is certainly spectacular and did not disappoint the legions of fans of the books and motion pictures. It features Frodo Baggins continuing his quest to destroy the dangerous ring. Young actor Elijah Wood as Baggins has certainly come of age during this project.

The cast also includes Sean Astin as Samwise Gambee, Ian McKellon as Gandalf the White, Andy Serkis as Gollum, Viggio Mortensen as Aragorn, Sean Bean as Boromir, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, Billy Boyd as Pippin, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, Dominic Monahan as Meriadoc, Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, and Liv Tyler as Arwen. Others are Bernard Hill, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, Hugo Weaving, John Noble, Ian Holm, Martin Csokas, Lawrence Makoare, and Thomas Robins. Christopher Lee and Brad Dourif appear in the extended version.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” won eleven Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. Kudos to producer-director Peter Jackson and screenwriters Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Peter Jackson. The watchable 201 minute film earned well over one billion dollars at the box office for WingNut Films and New Line Cinema.
