My Review

Hollywood at its worst is exemplified in the romantic-comedy crime-drama “Gigli.” Producer-director-screenwriter Martin Brest (“Scent of a Woman” 1992) presided over a film that has terrible writing, bad acting, virtually no production values, and lousy chemistry between the two stars, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez.

Affleck plays Larry Gigli, a low-ranking Los Angeles mob guy who get an assignment to kidnap the mentally challenged brother of a government prosecutor. His boss instructs Lopez’s character Ricki to assist him, and the story disintegrates from there. An example of the amateurish dialogue, when Ricki knocks at Larry’s door: Affleck: “May I be of some assistance?” Lopez: “That remains to be seen.”

The supporting cast includes some big names like Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, Lainie Kazan, Lenny Venito, Justin Bartha, Missy Crider, and Terrance Camilleri. The film cost $75 million to produce, and earned only $7 million in domestic and foreign box office receipts. “Gigli” was a huge box office bomb for City Light Films, Casey Silver Productions, Revolution Studios, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.

“Gigli” was nominated for eleven Golden Raspberry Awards, winning seven, such as Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Affleck), Worst Actress (Lopez), Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Couple (Ben & Jen), and Worst “Comedy” of Our First 25 Years.
