My Review
“Guerrilla: The Taking of Patty Hearst” is a documentary film about the 1974 kidnapping of socialite Patty Hearst by a leftist group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. Director Robert Stone expertly strung together stock news footage that featured interviews with Hearst’s parents, SLA members, law enforcement officials, and politicians like President Richard Nixon and Governor Ronald Reagan of California.
Soon after her abduction in February, 1974, she seemed to have become sympathetic with SLA goals as she was caught on camera robbing a bank with the group. There was quite a debate at the time about whether she was brainwashed (a victim of the Stockholm syndrome) or simply forced to cooperate. Whatever the case, Hearst was arrested in September, 1975, put on trial, found guilty, and sentenced to thirty-five years in prison in March, 1976.
President Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence, freeing her from prison on February 1, 1979. President Bill Clinton granted Patricia Campbell Hearst a full and complete pardon in January, 2001, just before he left office.
