My Review

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” tells the unusual story of a couple who break up and go through a procedure to erase each other from their memories. Director Michael Gondry (“Dave Chapelle’s Block Party” 2005) had some inconsistencies in the storyline, which affected the movie’s continuity, from the screenplay by Charlie Kaufman. They tried to create a film made up of romantic comedy, drama, and science fiction and did not fare so well.

Stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet did well in the execution department. Carrey did not have any of the “over-acting” that often plague his performances. Co-stars include Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson, Jane Adams, David Cross, Deirdre O’Connell, Thomas Jay Frank, and Ellen Pompeo.

Though not for everyone, the barely watchable “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” was a success in theatrical release for Anonymous Content, This is That Productions, and Focus Features. It won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and was nominated for another Oscar, Best Actress for Kate Winslet.
