“Troy” is producer-director Wolfgang Petersen’s ambitious attempt to depict the ten year Trojan War in one two-hour, forty-three minute long motion picture. The screenplay by David Benioff is loosely based on Homer’s timeless classic “Iliad,” written sometime in the 8th century B. C. Petersen was successful in creating a film with outstanding production values, authentic sets, genuine period costumes, stunning battle scenes, wonderful cinematography, and first-class performances by the actors. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design (Bob Ringwood).
The cast of actors all were at the top of their game. Brad Pitt is a natural as Achilles, Greece’s greatest warrior of old. Eric Bana played his nemesis Hector, the Crown Prince of Troy, with all sincerity. Others in the show include Orlando Blum, Diane Kruger, Brian Cox, Sean Bean, Brendan Gleeson, Rose Byrne, Peter O’Toole, Julie Christie, Nigel Terry, Garrett Hedlund, Saffron Burrows, John Shrapnel, James Cosmo, Julian Glover, Vincent Regan, Trevor Eve, Tyler Mane, and Nathan Jones.
An interesting fact about the movie is that Brad Pitt as Achilles damaged his Achilles tendon while doing one of his many stunts during filming. The very watchable and very entertaining “Troy” is a spectacle motion picture like Hollywood used to turn out on a regular basis. The filming in exotic locations like Malta and Mexico adds to the film’s atmospherics. Movie audiences responded by making “Troy” a big blockbuster in theatrical release for Warner Bros. Pictures.
