Patrick Swayze plays the English explorer Allan Quartermain in the mini-series “King Solomon’s Mines.” This version mostly sticks to the story as originally written by H. Rider Haggard in his 1885 novel of the same name, where Quartermain searches for King Solomon’s mines, the location of which was lost for centuries. Director Steve Boyum and teleplay writer Steven H. Berman do a classy job on a film that lasts nearly three hours.
The supporting cast with Swayze includes Alison Doody, Roy Marsden, John Standing, Gavin Hood, Ian Roberts, Nick Boraine, Hakeem Kae-Kazim, and Sidede Onyulo as Umbopa. The beautiful location shots in South Africa are a great feature of the show, thanks to cinematographer William Wages. This version of “King Solomon’s Mines” is the fourth major adaptation since others released in 1937, 1950, and 1985. It was aired as a mini-series on the Hallmark Channel over two days in June, 2004.
