My Review

“The Italian” is a moving Russian drama film about a six-year-old boy living in an orphanage who embarks on a search for his birth mother. This is in spite of the fact that he has been designated for adoption by an Italian couple; hence, he has been nicknamed “the Italian.” The fast moving 98 minutes was tightly directed by Andrei Kravchuk, with a marvelous screenplay by Andrei Romanov.

Child actor Kolya Spiridonov delivers a thoroughly convincing and emotional performance as Vanya the orphan. The talented young man would be on his way to stardom if he had been featured in a western film production. Other actors include Mariya Kuznetsova, Nikolai Reutov, Yuri Itskov, and Dima Zemlyanko in the very watchable motion picture “The Italian” distributed globally by Sony Pictures Classics.

The movie is mostly in the Russian language and some Italian, with subtitles. The one segment of the film in English is where the Italian couple visit and have a meeting with the head of the Russian orphanage, demonstrating that English is the international language.
