Carol Burnett heads the cast in the 2005 made-for-television movie “Once Upon a Mattress.” The familiar story was based on the Hans Christian Anderson fairytale “The Princess and the Pea” (1835). This is Burnett’s third “Mattress” having appeared in other TV versions in 1964 and 1972. She also starred as Princess Winnifred in the original Broadway stage production in 1959; in this show she portrays Queen Aggravain.

The talent supporting cast with Carol Burnett includes Tracy Ullman as Winnifred, Denis O’Hare as Prince Dauntless, Zooey Deschanel as Lady Larkin, Matthew Morrison as Sir Harry, and Tom Smothers is perfect as the King. Also appearing are Edward Hibbart, Michael Boatman, Shailene Woodley, and Michelle Harrison as Princess #12.

Broadway director Kathleen Marshall kept things organized and running smoothly. Janet Brownell penned the teleplay, and the music composers includes Marshall Barer and Mary Rodgers. “Once Upon a Mattress” was broadcast on ABC’s “The Wonderful World of Disney” in December, 2005. Carol Burnett also served as executive producer. It was nominated for two Emmy Awards: Outstanding Costumes for a Miniseries, Movie, or Special, and Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
