My Review

“Walk the Line” is a marvelous biopic about the life and career of Johnny Cash, focusing on his relationship with wife June Carter Cash. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon captured the essence of the stars’ personalities, even in the numerous musical numbers. Both were nominated for Academy Awards, with Witherspoon taking home the Oscar for Best Actress. (Other nominations include Best Sound, Best Costume Design, and Best Film Editing.)

The well written screenplay by James Mangold and Gill Dennis produced few dull moments. Mangold’s direction seemed to motivate the actors to give their best performances. That includes Robert Patrick and McGhee Monteith as Cash’s parents and Dan Beene and Sandra Ellis Rafferty as June’s famous parents, Ezra and Mother Maybelle Carter.

Music industry veteran T Bone Burnett was given the job of the film’s music director. He more than met the challenge of producing not only Phoenix and Witherspoon’s concert scenes, but also the musical numbers of other stars, also in the genesis of their careers. This includes Tyler Hilton as Elvis Presley, Waylon Payne as Jerry Lee Lewis, Jonathan Rice as Roy Orbison, Johnny Holiday as Carl Perkins, and Shooter Jennings appearing as his father Waylon Jennings.

Other actors include Dallas Roberts, Dan John Miller, Larry Bagby, Shelby Lynn, Clay Steakley, and Ridge Canipe as young Johnny Cash and Lucas Till as young Jack Cash, Johnny’s brother. Lucas Till would grow up to go on to bigger and better things, like starring in the second version of “MacGyver” (2016-2021).

“Walk the Line” is absolutely worth the walk to the video store to rent this watchable and entertaining motion picture. It was a big hit in theatrical release for Fox 2000 Pictures and 20th Century Fox.
