My Review

Director Christopher Nolan (“Insomnia” 2002) has lifted the Batman story out of its cartoonish origins and turned the franchise into high drama. “Batman Begins” with the tale of Bruce Wayne’s fear of bats as a child, the death of his parents at the hands of a mugger, and his evolution into the vigilante crime fighter Batman.

Based on the DC Comics characters by Bob Kane, the expertly penned screenplay by Nolan and David S. Goyer provides the actors ample drama to perform, and an action-packed storyline for movie goers.

Christian Bale is an outstanding choice for the title role. His wide range as an actor is perfect for the nuanced Wayne/Batman character, with different layers revealed as the film progresses. Michael Caine is good as butler Alfred Pennyworth. Others include Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Ken Watanabe, Mark Boone Junior, and Linus Roache and Sara Stewart as Bruce Wayne’s parents. Cillian Murphy is quite diabolical as Dr. Jonathan Crane/The Scarecrow, the heavy of the piece.

“Batman Begins” was nominated for one Oscar, Best Cinematography for Wally Pfister. It was successful at the box office for Syncopy, Legendary Pictures, DC Comics, and Warner Bros. Pictures. Two sequels were eventually released: “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012), with the three movies forming “The Dark Knight Trilogy.”
