My Review

A predictable plot and the obnoxious rants of Robin Williams pretty much describe “Man of the Year.” Director-screenwriter Barry Levinson (“Diner” 1982) demonstrates little creativity or originality in creating this stale political comedy-drama.

Williams plays Tom Dobbs, a popular host of a satirical talk show, someone like Stephen Colbert or Jon Stewart, who decides to run for president when many of his viewers urge him to do so. A large portion of Williams’ performance was reportedly adlibbed, and the lack of professionalism shows. Co-stars include Christopher Walken, Laura Linney, Jeff Goldblum, Lewis Black, David Alpay, Rick Roberts, Karen Hines, Linda Kash, David Ferry, Jacqueline Pillon, and David Nichols as the President of the United States. Featured are cameo appearances by Faith Daniels, Chris Matthews, James Carville, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler as themselves.

“Man of the Year” was a flop at the box office for Universal Pictures.
