My Review

A new James Bond has premiered to rave reviews and wide-spread audience acceptance. Daniel Craig takes over as the sixth official 007 in “Casino Royale,” the twenty-first in the Bond film franchise.

In this reboot of the entire series, Eon Productions returned to the original novel by Ian Fleming for its source material. The story has Bond earning his double-o status and getting into trouble with M for wrecking cars, murdering people, etc. Craig does an excellent job of portraying a younger, more vulnerable, and less experienced Bond.

Judy Dench returns as M, the head of the MI6 spy agency. As the only hold-over cast member from the four previous Pierce Brosnan movies, Dench becomes something of a maternal figure to Bond. And for the first time, the UK’s top secret agent gang goes without a Miss Moneypenny or a helpful Q.

The supporting cast includes Eva Green as the latest Bond girl, assigned by M to supervise Bond’s expenses, Mads Mikkelsen as the villain, Jeffrey Wright as CIA agent Felix Leiter, Giancarlo Giannini, Caterina Murino, Ludger Pistor, Jesper Christiensen, Tobias Menzies, Isaach de Bankole, Simon Abkarian, and a cameo appearance by Richard Branson. Sebastien Foucan demonstrates the art of freerunning as he is pursued by Bond through a construction site and urban landscape in a different kind of chase scene at the beginning of the movie.

Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, director Martin Campbell (“The Legend of Zorro” 2005), and screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Paul Haggis have hit the target here with “Casino Royale,” with a new and edgier Bond for the 21st century, and keeping the action and adventure and women of the 007 tradition. Daniel Craig would play Bond in four more films in 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2021.

“Casino Royale” is no gamble. It is an extremely fun and watchable two hours plus at the picture show, and a smash hit in the theaters for Eon Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
