My Review

“The Pink Panther” is a mildly amusing reboot of the Blake Edwards film series of the 1960’s and 1970’s, essentially a vehicle for Steve Martin to showcase his patented comedic abilities. Indeed, Martin co-wrote the screenplay with Len Blum, under the mediocre directorship of Shawn Levy (“Cheaper by the Dozen” 2003).

The cast is loaded with actors struggling with French accents alongside Steve Martin, including Kevin Kline, Emily Mortimer, Henry Czerny, Beyonce Knowles, Kristen Chenoweth, Roger Rees, Scott Adkins, and Anna Katarina. Jean Reno is the only Frenchman in a major role. Jason Statham, Clive Owen, and Boris McGiver appear in uncredited small parts.

“The Pink Panther” passed our watchable test, just barely, and was successful at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing. This was the tenth film in “The Pink Panther” franchise, with the first nine Blake Edwards products running from 1964-1993. (One was directed by Bud Yorkin.) A sequel to this show was released in 2009 called “The Pink Panther 2.”

“The Pink Panther” was nominated for two Razzie Awards: Worst Remake or Rip-Off and Worst Supporting Actress for Kristen Chenoweth.
