My Review

The Best Picture of 2006 is…..”The Departed,” an exciting, intriguing, and complex story that makes great movie fare. It also won Academy Awards for Best Director for Martin Scorsese, Best Screenplay for William Monahan, and Best Film Editing for Thelma Schoonmaker.

The story tells of the formation of the Special Investigative Unit by the Boston Police Department to disrupt organized crime activity, especially targeting the group headed by Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo Di Caprio) is assigned by his boss (Martin Sheen) to infiltrate Costello’s organization. Meanwhile, the BPD suspects that Costello has a spy in their midst. The high drama proceeds from there!

Other cast members include Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Matt Damon, Ray Winstone, Vera Farmiga, Anthony Anderson, Kevin Corrigan, James Badge Dale, David O’Hara, Mark Rolston, Kristen Dalton, Shay Duffin, and Robert Wahlberg, brother of Mark, as FBI Special Agent Frank Lazio.

Director Martin Scorsese (“New York, New York” 1977) has outdone himself here – this is one of his most riveting dramas in his distinguished career. “The Departed” is a thrilling and provocative two-and-a-half hours at the movies. It was a big hit at the box office for producers Brad Pitt, Brad Grey, and Graham King and Warner Bros. Pictures.
