My Review

“Stardust” is a fanciful tale of imaginary kingdoms, witchcraft, and romantic involvements across different dimensions. Director Matthew Vaugh (“Layer Cake” 2004) seems to lack focus as he combines elements of “The Lord of the Rings,” “Harry Potter,” and Bill Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Not much originality here from the mediocre screenplay by Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn, who adapted it from the 1998 book by Neil Gaiman. “Stardust” did make a small profit at the box office for Marv Films, Ingenios Film Partners, and Paramount Pictures.

The all-star cast seems up to the job: Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Charlie Cox, Robert De Niro, Kate Magowan, Nathaniel Parker, Sienna Miller, Peter O’Toole, Ricky Gervais, Rupert Everett, Henry Cavill, and Ian McKellen as the narrator. However, this luminous crowd does little to help “Stardust,” which causes audiences to entertain a visit from Mr. Sandman.
