“Plane” is a riveting action thriller movie which stars Gerard Butler as an airplane pilot who must crash land a plane en route from Singapore to Honolulu (via Tokyo). As fate would have it, they had to make the emergency landing on a Philippine island controlled by blood-thirsty rebels. To complicate matters, one of the passengers is a homicide suspect in custody of a law enforcement officer, who is killed in the crash.
French director Jean-Francois Richet (“Assault on Precinct 13” 2005) kept the film moving swiftly, at a good pace, with generous amounts of action sequences. The screenplay by Charles Cumming and J. P. Davis is lucid and well balanced.
Gerard Butler continues to do well as a leading man in major motion pictures. We expect more from him in the future. Co-stars include Mike Colter as the volatile murder suspect, Yoson An as the co-pilot, Tony Goldwyn as the main contact back home who leads the rescue effort, and Halleigh Hekking as Butler’s daughter, as well as Evan Dane Taylor, Paul Ben-Victor, Daniella Pineda, Lily Krug, Kelly Gale, Remi Adeleke, Claro de los Reyes, Otis Winston, and Joey Slotnick.
The watchable “Plane” from producer Gerard Butler and Lionsgate Films has done quite well in theatrical release, although not exactly a huge block-buster.
