The Best Picture Oscar of 2020 goes to…..”Nomadland,” an interesting look at a slice of American life rarely depicted in motion pictures: Elderly people traveling around the country in motor homes living a “minimalist” lifestyle.
The film won three Oscars (out of six nominations), including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for star Frances McDormand. She also was one of the producers, sharing the Best Picture nod with Peter Spears. Chloe Zhao was awarded the Best Director Academy Award, only the second woman to do so (Kathryn Bigelow in 2009, with Jane Campion becoming the third in 2021). The other nominations were for Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Film Editing.
McDormand was excellent as a Nevada woman who hits the road after her husband passes away and she is laid off from her job. She had outstanding material to work from, with a screenplay written by Zhao, which seems at first to be a meandering storyline that turns into a character study of “Fern” and the others she comes into contact with. It was adapted from the 2017 book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century” by Jessica Bruder.
The supporting cast includes David Strathairn, Linda May, Charlene Swankie, Peter Spears, and Bob Wells, a well known You Tube advocate of the nomadic and minimalist lifestyle. “Nomadland” is a watchable independent film, distributed by The Walt Disney Company’s Searchlight Pictures.
