Controversial filmmaker Michael Moore has come up with his most explosive documentary to date. “Sicko” takes a look at health care in the United States, including health insurance and the pharmaceutical industry. He compares the American market-oriented system with the non-profit, universal health care systems of France, Canada, Cuba, and the United Kingdom.
On the positive side, Moore highlights some practices of these nations that America could easily adopt. Some say the film ignores negatives of these taxpayer funded health care systems, such as long waiting lists for urgent care and unavailability of new treatments. The film also ignores the low percentage of GDP (gross domestic product) that is spent on defense and military preparedness in these nations, compared to the much higher percentage of America’s military budget, that many of these countries depend upon.
Michael Moore’s showboating is on full view in “Sicko.” He interviewed several 9-11 rescue workers from New York who said they were denied government financial aid. He then took the group to Cuba, where they filled three speedboats trying to gain entry into the U. S. military base at Guantanamo Bay, where alleged 9-11 terrorists are receiving free medical treatment. They were denied entry, of course, and Moore then traveled with the group to Havana, where the 9-11 workers got a heroes welcome and free doctor visits, medicine, etc., all in front of the cameras.
Buyer beware: “Sicko” from producer-director-writer-narrator-star Michael Moore is left-wing propaganda, not a comprehensive and unbiased look at health care issues.
