The drama and tension run very thick in the psychological thriller “Mr. Brooks.” Kevin Costner stars as a successful businessman and prominent member of the community who has a secret life as a serial killer. Tight direction by Bruce A. Evans (“Stand by Me” 1986) and a brilliant screenplay by Evans and Raynold Gideon helped Costner in what is probably the best performance of his career.
There is some fascinating chemistry between Costner and William Hurt as his alter ego; something reminiscent of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Other actors turning in some outstanding offerings include Demi Moore as the police detective hot on Costner’s trail, Dane Cook as an aspiring serial killer, Marg Helgenberger as Costner’s unsuspecting wife, and Danielle Panabaker as his sweet daughter. Others include Ruben Santiago-Hudson, Aisha Hinds, Lindsay Crouse, Jason Lewis, Reiko Aylesworth, Matt Schulze, Traci Dinwiddie, Laura Bailey, and Michael Cole (of television’s “Mod Squad” 1968-1973) as an attorney.
Unfortunately for producer Kevin Costner and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, “Mr. Brooks” was only a modest success in theatrical release.
