My Review

The amazing story behind the first English settlement in North America is told in “First Landing.” This made-for-television movie tells of Robert Hunt, a Church of England vicar who served as chaplain of the Susan Constant and two other ships transporting British citizens to the New World. Hunt was the glue that held the passengers and crew together, mediating disputes and holding tempers at bay.

The ships left England in November, 1606, arriving in Virginia on April 26, 1607. They landed three days later at a spot they named Cape Henry. Rev. Hunt led a service of dedication of the land to God. The ships then proceeded to another location nearby to start the Jamestown Colony.

Director Cristobal Krusen did an outstanding job at the helm of the movie, which is just under one hour long. Cinematographer Bunt Young had some fantastic scenery to work with in Virginia. The teleplay by Krusen and Mike Sinclair is very high quality. The cast includes Guy Birt as the 37-year-old Robert Hunt, and Josh Adamson plays Captain John Smith, the most famous crewman aboard the Susan Constant.

“First Landing,” from producer Michael Little of CBN, is an excellent depiction of the first permanent English settlement in the western hemisphere in Jamestown, which in time would become the United States of America.
