My Review

“Bridget Jones’s Diary” is a romantic comedy film that follows the story of an Englishwoman’s amorous activities in a very intimate fashion by her own narration from her personal journals. Director Sharon Maguire, in her feature film debut, attempts to create a light a light and breezy comedy, but instead has concocted an obnoxious look into the details of a shallow lifestyle.

The lead actress, Renee Zellweger, prances around on screen with a very phony sounding British accent. Her cigarette smoking and coy behavior are nothing but a big bore. The mostly U. K. co-stars seem to go along with the charade: Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, et al. The screenplay seemed to be thrown together by Richard Curtis, Andrew Davies, and Helen Fielding, adapted from her 1996 novel of the same name.

Nevertheless, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” was successful at the box office for Working Title Films, StudioCanal, and Universal Pictures. Sequels were released in 2004 and 2016. Zelwegger was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
