My Review

The Best Picture of 2008 is…..”Slumdog Millionaire.” This is a British film about a young man on a winning streak on India’s “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” television show also hit the jack pot at the worldwide box office, and at the Academy Awards, winning eight Oscars.

Director Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting” 1996) and screenwriter Simon Beaufoy tell the story of Jamal Malik, relying heavily on flashbacks. It seems to work for this picture. Dev Patel is convincing as Malik, who seems to know the answers to every “Millionaire” question. The film moved along at a steady pace, but did receive some criticism from India that Boyle did not accurately describe Indian society.

The supporting cast includes Freida Pinto, Madhur MIttal, Anil Kapoor, and Irrfan Khan as the police inspector. The Oscars awarded to “Slumdog Millionaire” are for best picture, director, screenplay, cinematography, film editing, sound mixing, original score, and original song (“Jai Ho”).
