“Fanboys” is an entertaining story of a group of high school friends, all “Star Wars” fans, who have waited years for the release of “Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace.” They embark on a road trip from Ohio to Skywalker Ranch in California to steal the film when it is discovered that one of them is terminally ill.
There are numerous slow points in the picture, due to poor execution by director Kyle Newman and uneven writing by Ernest Cline and Adam F. Goldberg. The film does have some laughs and humorous interludes, especially when they encounter a group of Trekkies along the way.
The cast includes Jay Baruchel, Dan Folger, Kristen Bell, Sam Huntington, Chris Marquette, David Denman, Christopher McDonald, Danny Trejo, Billy Dee Williams, Ethan Suplee, Seth Rogan, Will Forte, and some delightful cameo appearances by Carrie Fisher and William Shatner. “Fanboys” is a watchable comedy-drama film from Trigger Street Productions and The Weinstein Company.
