My Review

“My Life in Ruins” is a romantic comedy featuring Nia Vardalos as a tour guide in Greece whose group of tourists gets mixed up in wacky situations. This unappealing farce is one that we have seen before, with stereotyped characters and a secondhand plot. Director Donald Petrie (“Mystic Pizza” 1988) and screenwriter Mike Reiss did a ghastly job of putting together this motion picture. Even executive producers Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson couldn’t help out the situation.

The acting is at least acceptable. A slimmed-down Vardalos performs well enough, as does Richard Dreyfuss, Alexis Georgoulis, Rachel Dratch, Harland Williams, Alistair McGowan, Ralph Nossak, Caroline Goodall, Ian Gomez, Brian Palermo, and Rita Wilson as Elinor. Cinematographer Jose Luis Alcaine makes the most of the beautiful scenery of Greece, including shots of the renowned Acropolis. However, the conclusion is that you should take a detour and avoid having two hours of “My Life in Ruins,” a wreck at the box office for Fox Searchlight Pictures.
