“Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” is a made-for-television movie, something of a prequel to the series that aired on the Syfy Channel from 2003-2008. We say something of a prequel because “The Plan” consists of newly filmed material combined with a compilation of footage from the original miniseries and the first two seasons of “Battlestar.”
The teleplay by Jane Espenson shows the behind the scenes planning of the destruction of the human race in the Twelve Colonies by a council of Cylon Humanoids. Actor Dean Stockwell, not a member of the original cast for the first three seasons, is granted a prominent position in this Galactica retelling. His character John Cavill is shown leading the planning of the attack.
Along with Dean Stockwell, other stars of the show include Edward James Olmos, Michael Trucco, Grace Park, Michael Hogan, Kate Vernon, Tricia Helfer, Aaron Douglas, Callum Keith Rennie, Lymari Nadal, Matthew Bennett, Rekha Sharma, and Alisen Down.
Star Edward James Olmos does a stint as director of this film. In the DVD bonus material interview, he says, “When Battlestar fans see ‘The Plan,’ they’re all going to have to go back and watch the entire series again.” Well, not exactly. “Battlestar Galactica: The Plan” is a project done on the cheap, not a must see for fans of the series. It premiered on DVD in October, 2009, and a little later on the Syfy Channel.
