My Review

“The Way Back” is a fascinating story of a group of people who escape from a Soviet gulag in northern Siberia, and their four thousand mile walk to India. They cross through blinding snow storms and the dry Gobi Desert in the communist nations of the Soviet Union, Mongolia, and China, to finally get help in Tibet, where Buddhist monks help them recover enough to escape to freedom in India.

Producer-director Peter Weir made quite an epic film here. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Keith Clarke, adapted from the 1997 book “The Long Walk” by Slawomir Rawicz. The film was nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup. Cinematographer Russell Boyd deserves honorable mention for his filming in Australia and Bulgaria.

The cast did its part with strong performances including Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris, Saoirse Ronan, Colin Ferrell, Dragos Bucur, Alexandru Potocean, Sebastian Urzendowsky, Gustaf Skarsgard, and Mark Strong. “The Way Back” flopped at the box office for National Geographic Films and Imagenation Abu Dhabi.
