My Review

The Best Picture of 2010 is…..”The King’s Speech.” This inspiring story of how Britain’s King George VI overcame a speech impediment won a total of four Oscars, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor for Colin Firth in the lead role. Director Tom Hooper (“Red Dust” 2004) clearly instilled outstanding production values throughout this entire film, from an excellent screenplay by David Seidler.

Colin Firth took the Best Actor Academy Award for this portrayal of the British monarch, who was thrust into history by the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. This is clearly the role of a lifetime for Firth. Geoffrey Rush is a natural as the Australian speech therapist who helps the monarch to overcome his stammer. Helena Bonham Carter is excellent as George VI’s wife, Elizabeth, know to later generations as the Queen Mum. Both Rush and Carter were nominated for Oscars.

The supporting cast includes Guy Pearce as King Edward VIII, Timothy Spall as Winston Churchill, Derek Jacobi as the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael Gambon and Claire Bloom as King George V and Queen Mary (George VI’s parents), and child actors Freya Wilson and Ramona Marquez as the young princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, one of whom would ascend to the throne herself one day. Other actors include Eve Best, Anthony Andrews, Andrew Havill, Tim Downie, Orlando Wells, Simon Chandler, and Patrick Ryecart.

The remaining Oscar nominations (total of twelve with four wins) reflect director Tom Hooper’s attention to detail: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Original Score. The very watchable best picture winner “The King’s Speech” was a big hit at the box office for producer Geoffrey Rush, UK Film Council, Momentum Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, See-Saw Films, and Bedlam Productions.
