My Review

A predictable storyline and second-rate performances characterize the romantic comedy “The Back-up Plan.” Jennifer Lopez continues to demonstrate her narrow range of acting ability to the movie-going public. Director Alan Poul and screenwriter Kate Angelo tell the story of a woman who gives up on her search for a husband and undergoes artificial insemination to become a single mother. The same day she meets a man and falls in love with him. The shallow relationship and romance that ensues is completely uninspiring and insults the intelligence of the audience.

The co-star of the show is Alex O’Loughlin in a forgettable role Lopez’s boyfriend. Luckily for him, he would go on to real success later in 2010 in the television program, “Hawaii 5-0,” that would last for ten years on CBS. The supporting cast also includes Eric Christian Olsen, Michaela Watkins, Melissa McCarthy, Danneel Harris, Linda Lavin, and Tom Bosley, making his final film appearance in a big-screen career that started in 1963. “The Back-Up Plan” was a modest success in theatrical release for Escape Artists, an independent movie production company.
