My Review

“The Debt” is an exciting spy thriller about three Israeli agent who agree to a fabricated story about a botched attempt, decades ago, to capture a German doctor who performed horrendous experiments on Jews during the Holocaust. These past actions come back to haunt them. Director John Madden (“Shakespeare in Love” 1998) and screenwriters Matthew Vaughn (also the producer), Jane Goldman, and Peter Straughan have put together an engrossing drama that has a big problem: Too many flashback scenes that create confusion among viewers.

The actors deliver good performances, especially the three principals, Helen Mirren, Tom Wilkinson, and Ciaran Hands. Their younger versions were capably depicted by Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, and Sam Worthington. Jesper Christensen is particularly outstanding as the evil Dr. Dieter Vogel. Israeli actors Romi Aboulafia and Yonatan Uziel round out the supporting cast. “The Debt” was a modest success in theatrical release for Marv Films.
