My Review

“War Horse” follows the World War I journey of a horse name Joey, raised by an English teenager, bought by the British Army for use in the war, and the various encounters he had. A British captain is his initial caretaker, then captured by Germans soldiers. Later, a Belgian man and his granddaughter come into possession of Joey. This engrossing and emotional tale was superbly handled by legendary director Steven Spielberg (“Jaws” 1975), with an excellent screenplay by Lee Hall and Richard Curtis, adapted from the 1982 novel of the same name by Michael Morpurgo.

The cast was simply outstanding, with a dramatic film debut from Jeremy Irvine as Albert Narracott, the teenager who raised Joey and was forced to part with him for the war effort. His parents were played by Peter Mullan and Emily Watson. The supporting cast includes Niels Arestrup, Tom Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, David Thewlis, Toby Kebbell, Patrick Kennedy, Eddie Marsan, Geoff Bell, and Liam Cunningham, well known as Davos Seaworth of the television epoch “Game of Thrones.”

An interesting note is that one million horses were lost by the British, and some ten million by all sides in World War I. This film got the full Spielberg treatment, including the soundtrack by John Williams. It was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing.

“Warhorse” was successful in theatrical release for producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, Amblin Entertainment, The Kennedy/Marshall Company, and Walt Disney Studios.
