“Moneyball” is a true baseball story about the 2002 season of the Oakland Athletics where manager Billy Beane attempted to assemble a competitive team on a limited budget. Beane and his assistant manager Peter Brand use undervalued talent (new players and “washed-up” veterans) to replace higher paid star players. Director Bennett Miller (“Capote” 2005) and screenwriters Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin turned what could be very dry subject matter into an engrossing and entertaining motion picture. It was adapted from the 2003 book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Games” by Michael Lewis.
Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill turn in excellent performances as Billy Beane and Peter Brand, respectively. They strike a good balance between seriousness and, at times, wittiness. The supporting cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt, Stephen Bishop, Reid Diamond, Nick Searcy, Glenn Morshower, Casey Bond, Kerris Dorsey, Arliss Howard, and Royce Clayton as Miguel Tejada.
“Moneyball” was a hit at the box office for producer Brad Pitt, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
