“The Old Way” is a western drama starring Nicolas Cage as a farmer and retired gunman who goes on a mission to find the outlaws who killed his wife. Director Brett Donowho (“Acts of Violence” 2018) and screenwriter Carl W. Lucas put together an enjoyable and watchable classic western that could have been out of a Louis L’Amour novel.
Cage brings his limited acting range to the film, which is actually perfect for this role. He is something of a “bargain basement” Clint Eastwood, a strong silent type with limited vocabulary. The supporting cast is quite good including Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Clint Howard, Nick Searcy, Shiloh Fernandez, Abraham Benrubi, Dean Armstrong, Noah Le Gros, and Kerry Knuppe.
“The Old Way” was filmed in Montana, with excellent cinematography by Sion Michel. This independently produced movie earned almost no money in theatrical release.
